A concise explanation of the tax inputs behind every Kipnet estimate.
How does Kipnet estimate 2026 federal income tax?
Kipnet applies the 2026 IRS progressive federal income-tax brackets, then uses the standard deduction for the selected filing status: $16,100 for single filers or $32,200 for married filing jointly. This estimate does not include credits, dependents, itemized deductions, or other individual tax circumstances.
What is included in FICA tax?
The employee FICA estimate includes 6.2% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare on all wages. It also applies the 0.9% Additional Medicare withholding rate to wages above $200,000.
Which states have 0% state income tax on wages?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not levy a general state income tax on wage income. Other state or local taxes may still apply depending on where you live and work.
What is an effective tax rate?
Your effective tax rate is the estimated federal income tax, employee FICA, and state income tax divided by your gross annual salary. It is different from your marginal tax rate, which is the rate applied only to your next dollar of taxable income.
